Fistula Week in Garissa: Hiddigo Manu (24)

Another refugee from Ifo camp in Daadab, she is been in the country for only 15 days. Her physique is typical of OF patients as she is small bodied/stunted.  She is one of whose OF stemmed from harmful traditional practices. At seventeen years, she delivered her first child albeit prolonged labour in the traditional manyattas.  The second born didn’t survive prolonged labour, and died at birth, while her third born was born shortly after. However, she was unable to conceive more children thereafter.

The community believes that any gynaecological problem including infertility may be resolved by inserting hot rods in the reproductive tract, which Hiddigo consented to.  The procedure left her with fistula which she has lived with for two years. In addition to the fistula, she developed stenosis (blocked reproductive organs) due to the wound inflicted on her by the traditional burning ritual.

She has not been able to play her ‘marital roles’ ever since and she is now worried that her husband will remarry and neglect her and their two young children (7 and 4 years). I still haven’t disclosed my problem to anyone and I hope this could be resolved before people in the camp realise that I leak urine. She wouldn’t allow the team to take her a picture for fear of stigmatisation.
